Extra Teeth?

Have you recently visited your dentist and found out that you have an extra tooth or multiple extra teeth? Don’t worry this is actually fairly common.

This condition is also called hyperdontia or supernumerary teeth. Normally the mouth has a total of 20 deciduous (baby) teeth and 32 permanent teeth. Extra teeth can appear anywhere in the mouth. They are usually small or misshaped.

Do extra teeth need to be removed? Always consult with your Dentist to determine if an extra tooth needs to be removed. Usually, your Dentist will refer you to an Oral Surgeon if they are unsure or are recommending to have the extra tooth removed. Sometimes extra teeth can be left alone if it does not affect your other teeth now or in the future. The location of extra teeth can be difficult to access for removal, which is why it is recommended to go to an Oral Surgeon who treats this condition regularly. Often, a 3D scan or Cone Beam CT is needed to determine the location and position of the tooth. A few reasons to have extra teeth removed include pain, damage to adjacent teeth, crowding of teeth, delaying eruption of permanent teeth, or it is affecting your oral hygiene. There may be other reasons to have an extra tooth removed, as every circumstance is unique. Again, it is important to talk with your Dentist or Oral Surgeon to determine treatment.
