When do you need a bone graft?

If you’re considering getting an implant, how do you know if you need a bone graft?

There are a couple of reasons you may need a bone graft.  Dr. Murphy will be able to determine if you need a bone graft by looking at a CT in the area of concern.  He is looking for enough bone in the area for a successful lifelong implant.

The purpose of a bone graft is to build bone so that your jawbone becomes denser and stronger if you do not have enough bone already in the area.

Bone loss can be caused by several different circumstances.  Once a tooth is lost, 25% of bone width is reduced within the first year in that area.  If left untreated for an extended period, there may not be enough surrounding jawbone to support a dental implant to replace a missing tooth.  Once bone mass is gone, it cannot be reversed which is why a bone graft may be needed.

Other reasons for a loss of bone density are injury, decay, infections and development defect.  Teeth and roots provide stimulation to the jawbone and that stimulation is a signal to the brain that your jaw is serving its primary purpose.  When teeth fall out, that stimulation is reduced or eliminated.  As a result, the body starts to use that calcium in the area for use elsewhere in the body.  A bone graft can help prevent or limit the amount of bone loss in this area.

The best way to find out if you need a bone graft it to schedule an appointment with Dr. Murphy.  He will determine your specific bone density in the area and make a recommendation for your treatment!  Call 970-420-6848, we are happy to talk with you about any questions you may have!
